Amália Awards

The Amália Awards aimed to enhance the name and image of what was and will continue to be the voice of the Portuguese Soul, but also to recognize the merit of those who, each year, made their contribution to keeping alive the greatness of Fado and, consequently, the greatness of Amália.

Amália Rodrigues Award

Prize Author: Mestre Rui Fernandes

A sculptural piece, in natural bronze (metallic yellow), cut out, which contains all that Amália was as a Voice, as an Artist, and as a Personality.

The piece is like a scepter signifying power. At the top, instead of the Arms of the Royal House, we have Her profile which we can relate to the end of Her performances; the Scepter is the liaison figure to Her powerful Voice, in all musical aspects. The piece describes the infinite, as well as the artistic qualities of Amália. Its base consists of two grey stones (Sintra) symbolizing her simplicity and humility. The two black faces are the mourning for her loss and the lament of Fado.

- Rui Fernandes, sculptor/author
